Damo Suzuki

CANNED

Krautrock innovator Damo Suzuki has died aged 74. He scraped by as a busker when his performances on the streets of Munich piqued Can’s Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit. In need of a new frontman, Suzuki fit their bill of a boundary pusher and he shaped influential albums like Tago Mago and Future Days with his distinctive “Japanglish” singing style. The Sex Pistols, The Fall, and Happy Mondays are among those who cite the Suzuki-fronted Can as a key influence. He left the band after three albums to dalliance with the Jehovah’s Witnesses, before returning to music after a decade of door-to-dooring. Long ensnared with colon cancer, he was unique for Musical chairs.
