Clarence Avant was known as “the Black Godfather” for his stature in the music industry, and he had the history to back it up. Active since the 50s, he guided the careers of everyone from Sarah Vaughan to Snoop Dogg, and his Sussex label launched an unknown Bill Withers to stardom. His reach expanded beyond music: He made lucrative career choices for athletes like Jim Brown and Hank Aaron, and even advised Carter, Clinton, and Obama. His wife was fatally shot during a home invasion in 2021, and Avant follows suit of a less dramatic natural causes aged 92. He was unique for Bad 4 U, You Look Dying & Decaying.
