Barbara Thompson

COLLAPSE-EUM

Jazz saxophonist Barbara Thompson has died aged 77. Initially pursuing a classical path, her admiration of John Coltrane and Duke Ellington rerouted her to jazz. From there she founded several jazz/rock ensembles in the 70s, and often worked in collaboration with her husband, Colosseum drummer Jon Hiseman. She made guest appearances on albums by Colosseum and Manfred Mannโ€™s Earth Band, worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber, and composed the theme and incidental music for A Touch of Frost. Thompson struggled with Parkinsonโ€™s for the final quarter century of her life and though she still made the occasional appearance on stage in the mid 2010s, after her hubbyโ€™s 2018 death her health declined to the point of appearing in a 2020 episode of 24 Hours in A&E. Dead And Dusted 1 feels like the top brass with this unique hit.
