Music
Craig Douglas is the first to stop rocking, and rolls straight into a coffin at 85. He enjoyed a string of chart hits in the 50’s and 60’s singing other peoples songs, with his cover of “Only Sixteen” making it to UK No.1 in 1959. He later went on to fail at getting selected for Eurovision and disappeared from the charts forever after the Beatles hit it big, spending the rest of his career in nightclubs and cruise ships. The hits might have dried up long, long ago but he at least serves as one himself for the musically themed Let the Music Play Just a Little Longer for ten points.
Politics
Italian firebrand liberal politician Emma Bonino served in both houses of the national parliament as well as the European parliament in her forty year career. She was most associated with the Italian Radicals and More Europe parties, was a big fan of civil rights and liberties, campaigned for the legalization of abortion and led international campaigns against capital punishment, FGM and world hunger. Boo! Hiss!
Even more impressive was continuing such a career after a lung cancer diagnosis in 2015, typically one of the c’s you really don’t want to get but she managed to well and truly defy the odds. It would take eleven years for the small-cell carcinoma to finally claim her at the age of 78, which works out as eleven points for DDP heavy hitter The Living End.
Religion
James Harkness was a Scottish Presbyterian minister who had more letters after his name than within it. I’m sure he needs no introduction whatsoever, having served as the Moderator of the General Assembly to the Church of Scotland for two years in the 90’s. He also served as the chaplain general in the British Armed Forces earlier in his career, where the internet assures me his duties would likely have included being responsible for the spiritual wellbeing of his fellow space marines, and instilling the wisdom of the God Emperor of Mankind.
The only formal obit to be found was a non-valid general death announcement from the Times, but with a bit more digging a brief mention of his funeral was also spotted in their Court Circular section this week, so nine points go to the Scottish themed Jocks Away, putting them into the top 20 on the board.
Sport
Former Aston Villa forward Harry Burrows was one of their star players in the early sixties, winning the Second Division and the League Cup in that time. A pay dispute led to his transfer to Stoke City in 1965 and was one of the big losses that led to Villa dropping into Third Division obscurity for a time. Burrows continued to flourish at Stoke, finishing as the joint top league goal scorer twice. Knee injuries ultimately led to him being put out to pasture with Plymouth Argyle before retiring and going into small business management. The winger gets his wings at 85 and nets 10 unique points for Midlands Footballer fans Waiting for Ugo, joining Jocks Away in the top 20 on that board.
Television and Radio
We finish with what could well turn out to be a crucial pick in the voice actor Mike McFarland. He was one of the biggest names to work in the dubbing of anime, most prominently as Master Roshi in the Dragon Ball franchise. Other works in the genre include One Piece, Fullmetal Alchemist and Attack on Titan to name but a small few.
His health troubles began early in 2025 with an abrupt cancellation of his scheduled appearance at the Florida Comic Con. A simple earache sadly transpired to be the result of a brain tumour that required emergency surgery. Updates were few and far between afterwards but his August announcement of, you guessed it, glioblastoma was seized upon by five teams that frequently either win the whole competition or come mighty close. Chief among the beneficiaries are The Sound of the Underground, who score their twelfth hit overall, a full seven of which have now succumbed to everybody’s most dreaded headache. They move to second, just two points from the top. I Will Not Die, it’s the World that Will End! better hope that Ludek Miklosko doesn’t go and…. uh-oh.
