Shirley Douglas

A REAL DEAD RINGER FOR DEATH

Actress Shirley Douglas has died, a few days after her 86th birthday. The Canadian actress appeared in films like Dead Ringers and as the Grandma in Barney’s Great Adventure. She was also a prominent civil rights activist and anti-Vietnam War campaigner in the 1960s. Her work with the Black Panthers culminated in a five day period in jail after she was caught being grenades for an armed struggle. This led to her being blacklisted as an actress for a number of years. In the latter half of the 1960s, she was married for four years to actor Donald Sutherland, the pairing of which produced a son, Kiefer, in 1966. Mother and son were able to perform together on stage before Shirley’s health began to decline rapidly a decade ago. She was a unique pick for Canadian theme team Rushing to Tim Horton’s for Maple Donuts.
