Shelley Duvall

GOODBYE, I’M SHELLEY DUVALL

The Shining star Shelley Duvall has been axed from life aged 75. Her thin frame and wide eyes created an unforgettable screen presence as her character gets mortified by husband Jack Nicholson’s descent into madness. It was a grueling recording process with sometimes north of a hundred takes, but didn’t detract from the fact Duvall bought talent to the table. She also became known for a fruitful partnership with Robert Altman that expanded her range, with roles including a mail-order bride in McCabe & Mrs. Miller, a gangster’s moll in Thieves Like Us, a groupie in Nashville, and Olive Oyl in Popeye.

Duvall was also in Annie Hall, Roxanne, and Time Bandits, and hosted several youth-focused anthology series. After a 1994 earthquake and the declining health of her brother, Duvall retreated from the spotlight, and a grotesque 2016 interview from Dr. Phil that exploited her mental health was widely and justly panned. Her friends instead pointed to a Shelley Duvall who was proud of her career, and she came out of retirement for one final role in 2022. She was picked by five teams, including Grim McGraw and Pearly Gates.
