Jazz bassist Richard Davis has died aged 93. He worked with prolific jazz figures such as Eric Dolphy and Sarah Vaughan, and deftly straddled genres as he backed up artists from Springsteen to Sinatra and formed the bedrock of Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks. In classical circles he performed with Leonard Bernstein and Igor Stravisnky (who reportedly regarded Davis as his favourite bassist). Later in life he found organisations to teach young bassists and fight racism. Cool cats assemblage Nice! wins the points.
