Old McDonald’s Bought the Farm

Seven more hits this week, most of them unique picks:

Music

Country Joe McDonald starts us off, who has Fixed-To-Die from Parkinson’s at the age of 84. He was the co-founder and lead singer of the folk group Country Joe and the Fish, and his very left wing activism made him very unpopular with the conservative American right. Folk-themed Buying Max Yasgur’s Farm snag their first ten points of the year.

Politics

Country Joe might have been on the list of Nixon’s public enemies, but his former deputy assistant Alexander Butterfield was likely the man at the very top of said list. His testimony during the Watergate investigations revealed the existence of Nixon’s secret taping system in the White House and proved the killing blow to his presidency. His death at 99 gets former champion and my front page predecessor Death Impends nine points for Thomas Jefferson Survives.

Science

Philosopher and smarty-pants Jurgen Habermas has also died this week at the age of 96. I was hoping to find some kind of funny controversy to joke about, but his all round expertise in various subjects with fancy words about the unity of society just gave me a headache instead. He continues a very bad year for Germany in deadpooling terms, making it a great year for current theme leader Deutschland verabschiedet sich!, getting a fourth hit to take them to a very solid 48 points.

Sport

Last year’s theme team silver medalist The Sick-Bed of Cuchulainn get their first points of this year with Olympic gold medalist Ronnie Delany. He took the gold for the 1500 meters in the 1956 games and went in to marketing and sports consultancy after retirement.

The next of our sports stars to fall this week is exactly the kind of hit which tends to separate the brides from the bridesmaids on the DDP. Amy Carr has tragically succumbed to brain cancer at the age of just 35. She played as a goalkeeper, coming through the ranks of the Arsenal and Chelsea youth academies, and made several appearances for the England youth sides in the 00’s as well. Her career was cut short in 2015 when she was first diagnosed with a tumour, though she spent the next ten years in remission. Sadly, she announced it had returned in December last year and was terminal this time around, and six teams took notice. Three former champions, including the reigning David Quantick’s Showbiz Pals get ten potentially crucial points.

Full time also came for Gordon Wallace at the age of 82. He was the former league record holder for career goals in Scotland, and spent most of his career playing for Montrose, Raith Rovers and Dundee. He’s the first hit this year for the Scottish player theme team They Think It’s All Over, scoring 10 points.

Television

And finally, we switch off this week with Wendy Playfair, an actress most well known for the 80’s Australian cult series Prisoner, where she played inmate Minerva Donovan. She’s the first hit of the year for Roasting Bodies In Redcar, scoring nine points.
