Lee Teng-Hui

LEE TENG-DOOMED

Former Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui has died after a long period of ill health. He came to fame in the 1970s as Mayor of Tapei when he dealt with water collection problems. He became President of Taiwan in 1988 (the first President born in Taiwan) and immediately began to move the country towards a democratic footing. He won Taiwan’s first democratic elections in a landslide, aided by the Chinese government firing missiles over the island near election day in disagreement with his candidacy! Instituting term limits, he left office in 2000, and was called the Father of the Taiwan Independence Movement, although he himself preferred what we’d call Devo Max. Lee was picked by 3 theme teams, including Hell to the Chief.
