Lauro Cavazos

RESTING ON HIS LAUROS

Seeing as the typical US Secretary of Education in a GOP administration advocates the viewpoint that all schoolchildren should be spoonfed the notion God founded America while Lincoln and Reagan were riding T-Rexes with guns, it may come as a surprise that the Gipper tapped moderate Democrat Lauro Cavazos for the post in the final months of his administration. Nominating the Texas Tech University president was largely seen as political calculation to boost George Bush Sr.’s presidential campaign, given the historical nature of the pick (he became the first ever Hispanic American US Cabinet member). Cavazos remained in the broccoli eschewer’s cabinet, but his credibility was torpedoed thanks to a mixture of an incoherent “all style no substance” approach and actually having some respect for educational institutions. He was still a true-blue Reagan nomination, though, having resigned after a scandal surrounding his improper usage of frequent flyer miles. Now school is out for him, aged 95, and he’s a hit for House Of Soon To Be With The Lord.
