Ken Mattingly

APOLLING WAY TO GO

Astronaut Ken Mattingly has returned to the stars aged 87. He orbited the Moon on penultimate lunar mission Apollo 16, where he took photos of the Moon and spacewalked to retrieve the film cannisters. His most memorable moment in space history came while he was on this small blue marble. He was slated to be part of the ill-fated Apollo 13 crew, but exposure to German measles kiboshed his spot. After an oxygen tank exploded and the mission goal changed from Moon landing to rescue, Mattingly’s comprehensive knowledge of the spacecraft proved invaluable in helping Lovell and crew conserve energy and get back to Earth safely. He was unique for Apollogies For Still Living.
