MRS POODLE SKIRT GONE TO THE DOGS

As with malt shops, drive-ins, and segregation, poodle skirts were a cornerstone of the innocent culture of 50s America. Its creator, Juli Lynne Charlot, was a popular entertainer in the 40s who performed with Xavier Cugat and the Marx Brothers. She was in need of an outfit for a holiday ball and was short on time and resources. The end result was taking a circle of felt, cutting another circle, slapping on holiday appliqué, and calling it a day. Her fellow partygoers loved it and she refined the design to feature various canines before ultimately settling on poodles, and the Grease-friendly garment exploded in popularity in sock hops across America. She was 101 and unique for Fiona’s 1922.
