John Savident

HE’S BUTCHERED, I SAY, HE’S BUTCHERED

Coronation Street stalwart John Savident has died aged 86. He was a regular of TV, film, and stage for decades, with his CV including A Clockwork Orange, Gandhi, Doctor Who, Yes Minister, The Battle of Britain, and the opening of Phantom of the Opera. However his defining role would come as booming butcher Fred Elliott on Corrie. His Foghorn Leghorn-esque vocal quirks and neverending struggles to find a woman quickly made him a favourite on the cobbles up to his departure from the show in 2006. Savident’s longevity was particularly impressive given he survived being stabbed in the neck back in 2000 (conveniently written into Corrie as a butchering accident). As did him being a “died of a heart attack in the late 90s” actor build if there ever was one! He was picked by Decomposing Blubber and a joker for The Retched pong of Brit sit-com.
