Ivor Robson and Betsy Rawls

TWO IN THE HOLE

One of the riveting subnarratives of recent DDPs is whether or not one of the two golf theme teams can disjoint itself from the other. That has now happened with Ivor Robson, “the Voice of the Open”, who has died aged 83. He started the Open from 1975 to 2015 with his unmistakable “On the tee…”, and famously never took a day off or a bathroom break. Only The DOA Tour picked him, breaking the stalemate.

Days later, Betsy Rawls died aged 95, reverting to the usual tread of an old golf name being on both The DOA Tour and In The Hole! Rawls studied to be a physician while treating golf as a fun side hobby. She proved good enough on the green to turn professional, and won 55 LPGA Tours including eight majors. After retiring from tournament play in 1975, she served as LPGA tournament director.
