OFF ZE LIST
The last of the beloved Dad’s Army repertoire is off duty. Ian Lavender was the youngest cast member of the classic sitcom by some margin; his “stupid boy” Private Pike beared the brunt of the physical comedy and was devised as asthmatic to give plausible reason for a young member of the geriatric platoon. Only Tom Baker could compare in iconic scarves on the telly. He also managed a lasting theatre career and spots on Yes Minister, Keeping Up Appearances, and EastEnders, but would forever be defined by Pike. But being part of a national treasure with fans spanning in birth from the 1890s to this millennium is a fine legacy to have and he never begrudged it. He was 77 and Bladerunner and Don’t Eat The Figs needed another name on their lists, though were having trouble remembering the name of the Dad’s Army chap they wanted to pick. Who was he again? Don’t tell him, Pike!
