A WOMAN UNDER THE GROUND
Actress Gena Rowlands has died aged 94. She was noted for her many collaborations with husband John Cassavetes across a string of acclaimed independent films, including two Oscar-nominated roles as a struggling wife and mother in A Woman Under the Influence and a woman who helps a boy escape the mob in Gloria. Son Nick also directed her for popular tearjerker The Notebook, winning her new fans into her old age. I know her best for her detective guest spots, appearing as the tech wiz murderer’s wheelchair-bound wife in Columbo and as Monk’s one-time neighbour in Monk. Her subdued heartbreaks in both stick in the memory. The announcement she had dementia earlier this year would’ve made her a popular pick next year had she made it, instead she has to settle for five teams, including Swimming in the Death Pool and Just One More Death.
