SMURF MAN TURNS BLUE

Singer Pierre Kantner, best known as Father Abraham, has smurfed his last smurf at the age of smurf. He developed his “Father Abraham” persona, with its distinctive bowl cap and silver beard, after writing the carnival song “Father Abraham had seven sons”. The biggest hit however came through the quirky “The Smurf Song” in the late 70s, a #1 hit in many countries and a UK #2 for which he made multiple televised appearances accompanied by Smurf puppets. He had a few smaller Smurf follow-up hits, but oddly his ventures into political music such as “Wat doen we met die Arabieren hier” (“What do we do with the Arabs here?”) failed to gain a similar traction. He waited until this year to be a DDP pick, possibly because most of the competition assumed he was already 70 when he had his big hit, but Are You Still Dying, Darling? stepped in just in time to benefit from the Smurf man meeting his Gargamel.
