Mexican television stalwart Chabelo has died aged 88. Xavier López Rodriguez had created the “Chabelo” child persona while working as a fill-in for TV network Televisa in the 50s, but didn’t truly make his mark on Mexican culture until starring in the longlasting children’s game show En Familia con Chabelo. His Mario-esque garb lit up living rooms for the next half-century, and his career longevity put him in Guinness World Records and made him a memetic immortal on Mexican social media. Hispanics and Lati-no’s saw through the guise and correctly suspected Chabelo had all the immortality of Clive Dunn and Abe Vigoda.
