Antonio Carbajal

TOTA TOTALLED

50s/60s World Cup everpresent Antonio Carbajal has died aged 93. The Mexican goalkeeper was a long-standing player with Club León, but it was as “El Cinco Copas” (“The Five Cups”) he became best remembered. He made his Cup debut in 1950, of which he was the last surviving player, and followed suit with appearances in 1954, 1958, 1962, and 1966. His attendance rate was unparalleled until Lothar Matthäus marked his fifth Cup in 1998, and though the company has become slightly less exclusive since (Ronaldo and Messi joined the fold last year), he still maintains the joint record half a century on. Two football theme teams with even higher attendance rates score.
