Three more hits to round up this week outside of the Drop 40 massacre that February has brought so far:
Film
Robert Duvall takes top billing for the final time this week, having died at the age of 95. A noted character actor with a reputation for elevating everything he turned up in, he’ll always be most well known for Apocalypse Now and The Godfather. His absence in Part III of the latter due to a pay dispute is often cited as one of the key reasons nobody likes it. He won an Oscar for one of his rare leading roles in Tender Mercies and other films include classics such as The Great Santini, The Apostle, and, errr, The 6th Day. Thirteen teams cash in, and he’s jokered by Vietnam theme team Lt. Colonel Kilgore’s Ultimate Surf Party for ten points.
Our other hit from the world of film came a day later in the form of Frederick Wiseman, a documentary maker who focused on social and economic challenges facing the lower strata and minority demographics of American society. 1967’s Titicut Follies is particularly notable for having gone the full journey of being banned for release to selection for cultural preservation.
Theatre
The world of opera says goodbye to Belgian bass-baritone singer José van Dam, who’s curtain comes down at the age of 85. It was a firm QO gamble this one, but The Independent comes through for opera-themed The Fat Lady’s Singing to the tune of a unique ten points.
