Sunset of the Age of Aquarius

A very quiet spell from the reaper continues as we move in to February with only three hits to report this week. Four if you count Brad Arnold, but he’s an unlucky Drop 40 nominee so will get a full spread later.

Elsewhere we have the biographies and pictures mostly completed for the new entrants this year, and special thanks go to Commtech, drunkasaskunk, Dying Probably, Spade_Cooley, Summer in Transylvania, Toast, and wannamaker for volunteering to help to get them done!

Music

Founding member of the pop band The Fifth Dimension, Lamonte McLemore has departed our own dimension at the age of 90. He was also a professional photographer, doing the shoot for Stevie Wonder’s first album. The band had mutliple hits across from 1969 into the early 70’s, the biggest and most timeless by far being Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In. The original line-up broke in 1975 but Lemonte continued to sing with various later incarnations of the band until 2006. He’s the first of two crucial hits this week for musical theme team LW’s Latest Hit, scoring nine points.

Sport

Detroit Tigers pitcher Mickey Lolich, has scored a home run for the motor city themed Made in Detroit. I don’t know a thing about baseball, but his Wikipedia page is chock full of numbers and statistics so I’ll just assume that means he was really, really good. Post-career he went into selling doughnuts and also had a random cameo in 1977’s The Incredible Melting Man. It didn’t lead to any Oscars, but DID lead to a mention by Mystery Science Theatre 3000, hence the other theme team selection for him, MST3K Massacre. Six points for each team.

Sonny Jurgensen also touches down for good and gets a unique nine points for NFL-themed Traded to the Saints. Jurgensen played with both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins across 18 seasons. He was widely regarded as one of the best passers of the ball in the history of the sport, and the Redskins retired his #9 Jersey in tribute in 2022.
