Opera director Sir Peter Jonas has ended several years of off-on illness by dying aged 73. Jonas was chiefly linked to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra,first as assistant to Sir Georg Solti, before becoming the main man from 1978 to 1985. He was then manager of English National Opera unti 1993. He was known within opera circles for his fierce promotion of baroque era opera (Monteverdi and Vivaldi for those of us in the dark here). He was a unique hit for Read em and Reap, possibly due to the fact that Sir Peter had bounced back from several periods of grave health in the recent past. He brings a certain degree of style and sophistication to the DDP which will no doubt be ruined before long with a Mirror cancer mum.
