Robert Fyfe

HOWARDS END

Comedy actor Robert Fyfe has died aged 90, one of the last of the regulars from 20th Century Last of the Summer Wine. In Summer Wine, Fyfe played Howard, an aging husband, constantly henpecked by his wife, and with his eye on his overly glamorous girlfriend Marina. Brought on as guests in the stage player in the early 80s, the characters proved so popular with theatre goers that they transferred to the TV. In later years, when many of the cast had sadly died, and with Peter Sallis’s health and advanced age meaning he could no longer be the main lead, the antics of Howard became the backbone of the show. Fyfe’s comedy was typified by hangdog expressions, a well placed stutter, and sneaking around the sets like a man with a guilty conscience, even when there shouldn’t be one! Other than Summer Wine, Fyfe had also appeared in Cloud Atlas, Monarch of the Glen, and played “retiring” lollypop man Malcolm in Coronation Street in 2012. He was picked by 8 teams, and was the joker for Last of the Summer Winos.
