Richard Huckle

And so the DDP gets its first murder victim of 2019… Really, when your actual defence lawyer calls you one of the worst sex offenders in British legal history, things aren’t too likely to end up with gin and tonic on the lawn. Richard Huckle was a devout Baptist with no criminal record before he set off on his travels, moving to Malaysia after graduating university in 2010. There he set himself up as a teacher, photographer and missionary, jobs that helped him pursue his first love: raping children. Police confirmed 29 separate victims of Huckle, but believe the true number could run into the thousands. It took over an hour to read every charge against him in court, and among evidence uncovered by cops was him writing an ebook called Paedophiles And Poverty: Child Lover, and video footage of him raping a six-month-old in a nappy. He was sentenced to 25 life sentences in 2016, and in this case life meant life: a fellow prisoner decided to shank him repeatedly and end his grim life just three years into his sentence.
