Hollywood Squares host Peter Marshall has been Xed out aged 98. He had been active as a Broadway actor and half of a comedy act before being offered the Squares gig, a role he accepted solely as his archrival Dan Rowan would’ve been given hosting duties otherwise. The concept of celebs fooling about with mock answers proved a smash, and made a star out of Marshall as well as a prime claim to fame for character actors like Paul Lynde and Cliff Arquette. It was adapted across the globe, notably including Bob Monkhouse’s Celebrity Squares in the UK. Marshall was lucky to survive a brush with COVID in late 2021, but there would be no LaCock-up for his four pickers this year.
