Pamela Sharples

FROM SWINGING HANDBAG TO IN A BODYBAG

Peer Pamela Sharples has died aged 99. The widow of Governor of Bermuda Richard Sharples, she ascended to his peerage following his assassination by militants. She remarried twice and outlived both husbands (the second to pancan and the third to heart issues), but she forged through her tragedies without dwelling on them. A memorably feisty character, she was noted for her sharp wit and above all once hitting a reckless cyclist with her purse after he almost crashed into her! After the incident she posed for pictures. Made of stern stuff till the end, she was lucky to survive a bout with pneumonia aged 90 yet lived for nearly another decade. Two teams took a swing at Sharples this year, including a first hit for Just Yvonne.
