Lynne Reid Banks

THE L-SHAPED TOMB

One of the first two women to present news on British TV, Lynne Reid Banks felt pigeonholed by only being given “the rubbish” to do and turned to writing her own book. The result, The L-Shaped Room, addressed a clandestine pregnancy in the early 60s and its forward-thinking approach struck enough a chord that she could securely make a living as a novelist. Though she never quite replicated her first book’s success, she locked down a new generation of fans with 1980 children’s magic novel The Indian in the Cupboard. She was 94 and picked by three teams.
