Len Ashurst

ASH HEARSE

Footballer Len Ashurst has died aged 82. He played 13 years and 409 league games as a defender for Sunderland in the 1950s and 1960s, where he got one cap for the England under 23s. As a manager, he worked at several clubs, including Hartlepool, Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday, but his best success came at Newport County, where he own the Welsh Cup and took the minnows into European competition. After his management career he enjoyed a lengthy run as an administrator for the FA. He was a unique pick for Black Penguins of Doom.
