Giorgio Napolitano

A PALL FOR TANO

Longtime kingmaker of Italian politics Giorgio Napolitano has died aged 98. He became the first ex-Communist head of state in Italy when elected by parliament as president in 2006. Napolitano bulked the political muscle of the largely-ceremonial elder statesman post, playing a key role in shaping a rotating door of governments during the precarious financial crisis. Such was his influence that detractors nicknamed him Re Giorgio (β€œKing Giorgio”), and as the only beacon of stability in the political landscape he reluctantly stood for a second term before stepping down partway through. A pack of Giorgio marauders gain points, including the usual world leaders theme teams.
