Gene Deitch

NOT SO ANIMATE

Animator Gene Deitch has died aged 95. He won an Oscar in 1961 for Munro, a short animated film which preceeded Breakfast at Tiffanys in the cinemas. He also made 13 Tom and Jerry episodes, in which he disapproved of the violence and wanted to show more of the inner Biblical struggle. The online consensus is that these Tom and Jerry shows are the worst ever made, and I had never seen them until just now, and thought “How can you ruin Tom and Jerry?” And actually, yes, they are terrible. Anyhow, he had a long career in animation.

Gene Deitch was a unique hit for Today’s the day the maggots have their picnic.
