Alas Smith and bones
|
Comedian, actor and director Mel Smith has died of a heart attack.
Smith was part of the team which made the hugely popular 'Not the Nine O'Clock News' sketch show, which featured
Griff Rhys Jones, Rowan Atkinson and Pamela Stephenson. The show only ran from 1979-1982 but became a phenomenon with huge sales of related albums and books and presaged the "alternative comedy" scene of
the 1980s. It was Smiths' insistance on a less mannered, naturalistic delivery, even in the most absurd sketches which was a key element in the show's success. Smith then formed a spin-off partnership with Jones. They formed the production
company Talkback, repsonsible for many later TV comedy hits, as well their own sketch series 'Alas Smith and Jones'. Smith later branched into film, directing 'Bean' starring Atkinson in 1997. He also acted on stage, film and TV, including
children's educational series 'Smith and Goody'. He even dabbled in pop, releasing the charity Christmas single 'Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree' with Kim Wilde in 1987. A magnificently varied career has been sadly cut short at the age of just 60.
A unique hit for You Might Be A King Or A Little Street Sweeper, quite apt for a unique talent in British entertainment. Just don't mention 'Morons From Outer Space'...
