Sid Krofft Stops Puffing

Another four down as we head towards the end of April:

Film

We start with Nathalie Baye this week, who’s end has come courtesy of Lewy Body Dementia at the age of 77. Baye was showbiz royalty in 1970’s and 80’s France, having a high profile relationship with rockstar Johnny Halliday. She won four CΓ©sar awards in total for acting: Every Man For Himself, Strange Affair, La Balance and The Young Lieutenant. She’s more well known abroad for her performances in Catch Me If You Can and Downtown Abbey, and was the recipient of the Legion of Honour in 2009.

A somewhat unsavoury defense of GΓ©rard Depardieu and dismissive attitude to the multiple women he assaulted aside, she shuffles off her mortal coil for a solid 11 points for French theme team A la vie, a la mort.

Music

Asha Bhosle was one of the biggest stars in Bollywood’s history, with song credits hitting over 12,000 over a near 80 year career. She spent most of her  years as a playback artist where her only major rival was her sister, 2022 DDP hit Lata. If you’ve ever indulged much in Bollywood then the chances are good it’s the voice of one of these two that you’re hearing whenever the performing actress is pretending to sing. Asha went on to become renowned for her versatility and explored multiple genres and collaborations with Western artists such as Boy George, Kronos Quartet and Gorillaz. It’s her ten character name that brings her to the DDP however, as a unique nine pointer for Perfect 10.

Sport

Our third baseballer of the year, and second Pittsburgh Pirate comes in the shape of Phil Garner. He won the 1979 world series with the Pirates before moving over to the Houston Astros, also managing them in the mid-noughties. I still can’t make any sense of baseball stats, but I can say the world has lost one of the finest mustaches I’ve ever seen. He’s a unique hit for Banana’s Bruises, scoring eleven points and puts the committee member and former champion’s B-team higher on the board than their A-Team for now!

Television and Radio

We finish off with Sid Krofft, the most popular pick this week, and just like Asha Bhosle has joined their sibling in death and DDP fame. With his brother, 2023 hit Marty, they made multiple TV productions involving puppets in the 1970’s that went on to widespread cult appeal once the kids they were aimed at grew up. Their most notable works included H.R. Pufnstuf, Land of the Lost, and Sigmund and the Sea Monsters. Personally I think it all looks like something out of Five Nights at Freddies, but who am I to judge.

They went on to successfully sue MacDonald’s for copyright infringement, and also ended up in court against each other over royalties in their final years, so their relationship was every bit as bonkers as their nightmarish kids shows it would seem. Sid nets five points for four teams, notably sid and marty coffin, who have now bagged both of the brothers.
