Eva Marie Saint: Sunset of a Golden Age

The thirteenth of the 2026 Drop 40 has fallen and it’s Golden Age Hollywood actress Eva Marie Saint that’s in the spotlight for the final time. She started out in showbusiness in the mid 1940’s with several well received parts on both the small screen and stage, netting a critics Broadway award for The Trip to Bountiful and a pair of Emmy nominations for The Philco Television Playhouse and Our Town before breaking Hollywood.

Said break came in the shape of 1954’s On The Waterfront opposite Marlon Brando, bagging her the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in her debut film role. Later roles included Exodus, A Hatful of Rain, Raintree County and the renowned Hitchcock spy thriller North By Northwest.

Saint never quite hit the level of household fame that the likes of Audrey Hepburn or Elizabeth Taylor did, but her seven-and-change decades of work was well regarded and tributes came pouring in following her passing at 102. A hit for 64 teams this year, she was making her fourth appearance on the Drop 40 and clocked in as the joint twenty-second most popular pick. Bonus points or no however, a centenarian is never likely to make a huge difference to the scoreboard at this time of year and nobody in the top 50 had her on their team.

Perhaps continues to hold the pole position as we head towards the end of the year, but late charges are far from unheard of in this most morbid of pastimes, so, as ever, stay tuned!
