Gladys Goes West

Four more to round off the month, and only two from the last week, shockingly enough for January!

Science

Gladys West was one of the very few black scientists hired by the US Government in the 1950’s for her expertise in mathematics and computer programming. Her work included charting the relative motion of planets, calculating the most precise shape of the Earth to date, and ultimately being one of the most important figures in the development of GPS. Groundbreaking work, yet she remained as much a “Hidden Figure” for deadpoolers as the general public, becoming a unique hit for 20 Random Guys Part 1.

Television

Former child actor Sidney Kibrick was the last surviving cast member of the Our Gang short films. He claimed to have been getting paid $750 a week for it, but given that works out to over $13000 a week in today money, it’s firmly “citation needed” territory. He’s the second unique hit in a single day for Perhaps Pointless Punts, and I only spotted the QO notification two weeks later!

Yvonne Lime has soured on life at the age of 90. We’ll be glossing over all her later philanthropic achievements, who cares about “helping children” and “Nobel Peace Prize” nominations these days. As an actress she was most active on American TV sitcoms, but her star turn in the 1957 masterpiece I Was a Teenage Werewolf and subsequent mocking by Mystery Science Theatre 3000 put her on the radar of theme team MST3K Massacre, to the tune of a nine-point unique hit.

The third of the small screen stars to switch off for good this week is Demond Wilson, who played the titular son Lamont in Norman Lear’s CBS sitcom, Sanford and Son. He never became an established star, turning to Christian evangelism later in life. His departure to heaven is the first hit for Norman Lear and All His Friends with the 11 points putting them straight to second in the theme league at the end of the month.

Over on the theme league, Kicking Buckets Instead of Balls tops the table with 16 points, and the only team with two hits so far. Norman Lear and All His Friends follows with 11, and third place is shared by A Question of Sprouts and Perfect 10 with 10 each.
