Major league baseball player, and later manager of the Texas Rangers, who "embraced the Saviour" in 1983 and thereafter went round saying "praise the Lord" all the time. Diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2001, which later proved terminal.

O'Brien, Richard
Born 25 March 1942  (Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England)
The man behind 1975's "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", who hasn't really done anything since, except present television series "The Crystal Maze". His real name is the rather plainer Richard Smith. This year's Derby Dead Pool is awash with "Rocky Horror" performers: see Meat Loaf, Patricia Quinn and Jonathan Adams. And indeed Richard O'Brien is said to have based the Dr. Frank-N-Furter character on Alice Cooper.

O'Grady, Paul

Comedian and actor better known as his cross-dressing alter ego Lily Savage. He suffered a heart attack in 2002 but went on to recover and appear as the Child Catcher in the stage musical of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

O'Neal, Ryan
Born 20 April 1941  (Los Angeles, California, USA)
Actor who first made his name on TV, in US soap opera "Peyton Place", before going on to appear in numerous Hollywood films such as "Love Story" and "Barry Lyndon". Father of Tatum, Griffin and (by Farah Fawcett) Redmond, he was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia in 2001.

Mumbling reality TV star and former lead singer of Black Sabbath, who once caught rabies after an on-stage bat-biting incident. The heavy drinker and heavy metaller was nearly killed in a quad-biking crash in December 2003.

Wife and manager of Ozzy, she suddenly rose to prominence in 2002 as a result of MTV's "The Osbournes", and was diagnosed with colon cancer around the same time.

1970s sitcom actor (Father Dear Father, Man About the House, Robin's Nest). Only in his early 60s, but now in fragile health and a permanent resident of an old folks' home, due to three decades of heavy boozing and drug-taking.
