MULL OVER
Comic actor Martin Mull has died aged 80. He had worked as a satirical musician when he caught the eye of Norman Lear and was cast as a cruel wifebeater in soaps satire Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. His character died after being impaled on a Christmas tree star, but Mull himself became a reliable mainstay for decades to come. Among his CV included Colonel Mustard in Clue, Roseanne’s gay boss on Roseanne, Sabrina’s vice-principal on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, a private investigator on Arrested Development, and the voice of the chief villain on Danny Phantom. If you watch enough US sitcoms you’re bound to bump into him eventually, and he brought good value wherever he went. It was his career beginnings that brought him to the DDP as a pick for Norman Lear and All His Friends, keeping its name even in this Learless world.
