The man behind 1975's "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", who hasn't really done anything since, except present television series "The Crystal Maze". His real name is the rather plainer Richard Smith. Said to have based the Dr. Frank-N-Furter character on Alice Cooper.

Oddie, Bill

Rochdale's most famous son other than Cyril Smith, Oddie is one of the most respected names in the world of ornithology, but is perhaps most famous for providing several of the voices in the hit animated series "Bananaman". He also has an enduring (albeit unseen) friendship with the fictional Norfolk-based former king of chat, Alan Gordon Partridge.

Comedian and actor better known as his cross-dressing alter ego Lily Savage. He suffered a heart attack in 2002 but went on to recover and appear as the Child Catcher in the stage musical of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

American doctor who devoted his career to finding a cure for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease) and is now, ironically, suffering from it himself. It is a progressive motor neurone disease which has a 50% fatality rate within 3 years of diagnosis.
