Sutopo Purwo Nugroho spent most of his life warning people about impending deaths, so it was only fitting that he flagged up his own for the benefit of the Derby Dead Pool faithful. Sutopo was a civil servant who was named head of PR at the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management in 2010. He quickly became a celebrity in the country: partly for his calming, humour-laden manner, and partly because Indonesia is hit by a mass tragedy roughly every two days so there was plenty of media space for him to operate in. Even in his dying days he found time to cover the country’s devastating earthquake season, but in the end Nugroho was no-mo’. His death, along with John McCririck’s, shakes things up at the top of the DDP standings. GUN Away remain in the lead, but Pan Breed and Thomas Jefferson Survives both loom ominously in joint second.
