Sergi Mingote

THE SPANISHMAN WHO WENT UP A HILL BUT FELL DOWN A MOUNTAIN

Mountaineer and former politician Sergi Mingote has died aged 49. He was part of the K2 mission which planned to reach the summit of the notorious mountain in Winter – and has achieved the fact since. He retired as the Socialist Mayor of Parts del Valles in Spain (Catalonia for you Nats out there, of which Mingote was one) to take up the less exciting carereer of climbing huge mountains without oxygen supplies. On his decent from Camp I, he is believed to have fallen around 1300 feet (404 metres, half a km). For comparison, Owen Hart’s death plunge was 78 feet. He was a unique pick for Grim’s K2 team.
