Qaboos bin Said Al Said of Oman

OH MAN, THE SULTAN’S QABOOSHED

The Sultan of Oman’s 50 year reign has been ended by dying at the age of 79. News of his impending demise hit the airwaves in December, and so thirty teams dived on the chance for a royal knockout, including DDP veterans I’m Sorry for Your Trouble and Carkers Convention.  However, only one of them went for a Joker, and that put House of Soon to be With the Lord top of the pile. Our fourth change of leader in 10 days suggests an exciting DDP ahead..

Aged 29, he became leader of his country – with Western support – by overthrowing his dad in a coup. He kept his country neutral for half a century despite all the turmoil in that part of the world (for more evidence, turn on the news..) but was an absolute monarch who silenced all dissent and protest. That said, he did abolish slavery in the country, electrify the country, improve water supplies and open up airports and universities.  As a result of the long standing neutrality, Sultan Qaboos was often able to act as a mediator between Iran and the US, and was a key diplomat in the 2015 treaty which Donald Trump has ripped apart. Thank goodness we don’t need any strong Iran/American mediators around these days…
