Muriel Pavlow

Muriel Pavlow’s career stretched 65 years across both the small and silver screen. Although of mixed French/Russian heritage, she embodied a specific strain of Englishness in many of her roles. As a contract player with J Arthur Rank in the 50s she was the go-to girl for “wives back in Blighty waiting for their husband to come back from the war”, and in the “Doctor in the House” series she was the steadfast nurse who had a crush on Dirk Bogarde. You’re wasting your time there love… With her death, we lose one of the few people still alive who appeared on TV before World War II (she was in the 1937 BBC production of Hansel and Gretel).
