Kate Figes

DDP royalty The Living End’s run of nine consecutive years with a unique hit came to an end in 2018 with the lack of a QO for Indian arthouse director Kalpana Lajmi. However, the start of a new attempt at ten consecutive years begins right now with the passing of Kate Figes. The daughter of feminist critic Eva Figes, Kate had a somewhat lighter approach to the written word. She began her career in journalism, and indeed was for over a decade the literary editor for the Daily Mail‘s Sunday supplement. She eventually crossed over to hardcover side of things, specialising in non-fiction work that combined her own experiences with a wider research: dealing with post-natal depression, troublesome mother-daughter relationships and staying faithful in a long-term marriage. She’d written about her cancer battles for the Mail in 2018, and The Living End now gets the reward for paying attention.
