John Fraser

Actor John Fraser, who appeared in The Dam Busters, has died aged 89. He was a unique pick for Departures Board. Fraser was best known for his 60s film work, including The Trials of Oscar Wilde and Repulsion, but also appeared in a number of TV shows from Columbo (he played Columbo’s British counterpart, O’Keefe, in Dagger of the Mind) to Doctor Who (where he was guardian of the universe until The Master bumped him off, as The Master is prone to do to people in Doctor Who). Off screen, he was the friend of Dirk Bogarde and the lover of Rudolf Nureyev, which so nearly put him one degree of separation from Franz Beckenbauer and thus two from recent DDP alumnus Nobby Stiles. The world, as Chic Murray put it, is very small, but I wouldn’t like to have to paint it…
