Abdelaziz Bouteflika

Abdelaziz Bouteflika

Here’s one I’ve been fearing. Not because of any love for the former Algerian President, though, it’s another in a long line of difficult to spell DDP hits. Mr Bouteflika became Algerian President in 1999 in a landslide victory, although most of the other parties pulled out of the election believing the army was rigging the results. He ended the Algerian Civil War in 2002, and won a bigger landslide in 2004, which the OSCE claimed was fair. He was re-elected in controversial circumstances in 2009 after removing term limits, and in 2014 despite suffering a stroke and being visibily impaired throughout the campaign. As President, he made peaceful manoeuvres towards France, and chaired the Eritrea/Ethiopia peace talks. He was picked by twelve teams, including high fliers En Passant, and veterans Carkers Convention and Stab in the Dark.
